Nature

Subiaco is the largest centre in the Aniene Valley and a charming mountain town with ancient origins. Surrounded by the Simbruini mountains and stretching along the Aniene river, the city owes its name to the lakes, the Simbruina Stagna, created by Nero in the early 1st century BC to stop the course of the river at the foot of the mountains. The emperor had his Imperial Villa built here, and its remains suggest that the area was already appreciated in Roman times.

The slopes of the Simbruini mountains are covered by oak and beech woods, offering the visitors spectacular views. The forests are also home to a number of rare wildlife species: for instance, wild pigeons, mountain swallows, ravens and wallcreepers have made their nest in the area known as “Scoglio di San Benedetto”.
